Learn to Play Hockey at the Woodman’s Center
Ready for your child’s first big step into the world of hockey? Our Learn to Play program uses USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) to introduce young athletes to the sport in a fun, structured, and supportive environment. With age- and skill-based instruction, this class helps players move beyond basic skating and begin developing real hockey fundamentals.
Program Details
Ages: 4+
Instructor: Sean Goss, Hockey Coordinator
Take your child’s first step into hockey with our beginner-friendly Learn to Play program. Designed around USA Hockey’s ADM principles, this class introduces the essential skills players need to grow confidently on the ice — from movement and coordination to basic puck handling and small-area gameplay.
This program is ideal for skaters who are ready to progress beyond Learn to Skate and begin their hockey journey. Prior skating experience is recommended. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, players are grouped by age and skill level.
EQUIPMENT:
All required hockey equipment will be provided through Janesville Youth Hockey, with the exception of a stick, which families will need to supply. Participants will be able to pick up and get fitted for equipment on the first day (USA Hockey Try Hockey For Free Day); families should plan to arrive early (1-1.5 hours prior to session start) to allow time for proper sizing.
Players Will Develop:
- Proper skating technique for hockey
- Stickhandling and puck control
- Basic passing and shooting mechanics
- On-ice awareness through small-area games
- Confidence, teamwork, and foundational hockey IQ
A Strong Start for Future Hockey Players
Learn to Play serves as the perfect bridge between Learn to Skate and future hockey development programs. With supportive coaching and a fun environment, young athletes build the skills that lead to lifelong love of the game.
